Fur Rondy is an Anchorage tradition, and has been for 75 years. Basically it started when natives and other locals came together to exchange and sell furs. Now, it is more of a tradition. The town shuts down 2nd and 3rd Avenue for 10 days, and sets up a whole festival type atmosphere where everyone is invited to celebrate life in Alaska. The festival came complete with a Ferris Wheel, tons of food, and of course competitions, that include: the Reindeer Run, Frostbite Footrace, Outhouse Races, Sled Dog Races, Snow Sculpture Contest, and the Dog Weight Pull. There were also horse drawn carriage rides! Everyone in Anchorage comes together for these events over a week's time, to either participate of watch these events take place. Ryan, Jen, Hailey, Matt, Sarah, Devin and I went to Fur Rondy, and had a lot of fun! We watched snowboarders and skiers make a 35 foot drop off of a jump, and make flips over 2nd Avenue! It was a VERY cold day! We had to stop and buy ear warmers and hats when we go there!
Here are some pictures I took, and because we were not able to attend some of the events, I found some on the Fur Rondy website to also show you!

We were in Girdwood, when the Iditerod had it's ceremonial start in Anchorage, but here are some fabulous photos I found on the Fur Rondy site! The official start was the next day, in Willow. The race ends in Nome, about 1064 miles away!
My personal favorite!
